Staff in any structure can be knowledgeable or not. Your sales associate should be interested in filling your needs and assisting you in choosing what you want rather than selling you what the store has. If a store is not willing to accommodate you in creating or special ordering what you want, move on! Also, check whether the store has a full service repair department. Many stores employ full or part time watchmakers and goldsmiths. Make sure they have a gemologist/appraiser in house or under contract. Most insurance companies will not accept appraisals that do not have a gemologist’s signature. Be sure that wherever you choose to patronize, you get to know the staff and they get to know you. Remember the old “Cheers” show, ‘where everybody knows your name’? You want to be on a first name basis with your jeweler.
Once you find a store you feel comfortable in, become a loyal client. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t shop other stores for ideas but give your personal jeweler the opportunity to serve you first. If owners and managers value referred clients, they revere the loyal ones!
